The question callers ask

Does it have to be ADA, or just handicap accessible?

Jason Rental Works rents 1 accessible model, the PolyJohn Comfort XL, and we call it wheelchair-accessible: a roll-in floor, no door sill and more than 16 square feet inside. We do not certify any unit for a specific inspection. If an inspector, venue or permit names a standard, send it to us before booking.

A caller in our 2026 call review asked exactly this, then added: "It has to be wheelchair accessible. That's all I know." That is the right starting point. The question is who will use the unit, and who, if anyone, will inspect it.

  • Private party at home: the goal is simple. A guest in a wheelchair, on a walker or recovering from surgery can get in, turn and close the door.
  • Public event, park, church or school: the organizer usually has a count to meet. The 2010 ADA Standards set that count in §213.2.
  • Permit or venue contract: read what it says, then send it to us. Your permit office or venue decides what satisfies it.
Legal minimum vs our advice. The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design are the federal rules for public facilities. We point you to the official text and size orders to match it, but we do not give legal advice. Your organizer, venue or permit office has the final word.

How many accessible porta potties does my event need?

Under the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2, when portable toilets are grouped in a cluster, at least 5% of the units in each cluster must be accessible, and never fewer than 1. A 12-unit festival bank needs 1 accessible unit. A 21-unit bank needs 2, because 5% of 21 is 1.05, which rounds up.

callers in our 2026 review asked for a wheelchair-accessible unit. A festival organizer expecting about 2,000 people on day one had not planned one at all until it came up on the call.

Turning space & specs

What does the 60-inch turning space mean?

The 2010 ADA Standards describe wheelchair turning space as a circle 60 inches in diameter, or a T-shaped space, not a 60-inch radius. A 60-inch radius would need a room 10 feet across. The Comfort XL measures 62 by 62 inches outside, with a 32-inch door frame and no sill at the door.

People mix up radius and diameter all the time, and it leads to bad advice. A 60-inch diameter is 5 feet across, about the space a standard manual wheelchair needs to spin around.

The outside size is not the inside clear floor, because walls take up room. If a guest uses a large power chair or scooter, ask for the manufacturer's interior measurements, or have the guest try the unit on delivery day.

Tech specs: PolyJohn Comfort XL (PH03)

  • Outside size62" × 62" × 91"
  • Door frame32" × 74"
  • Weight240 lb
  • Waste tank33 gal
  • Door sillNone, roll-in
  • Open floor16+ sq ft
  • SinkNo (add a station)
  • HookupsNone

Our advice: the 33-gallon tank is about half a standard unit's 60. At a busy event, keep the accessible unit for guests who need it, and let the standard units carry the crowd.

Placement

Where should an accessible porta potty go?

Place the accessible porta potty on the firmest, flattest ground on site, inside the same cluster as the other units, with a smooth route to the door and at least 3 feet clear in front of it. Concrete, gravel and packed caliche work well. Loose sand, sloped grass and low spots that flood after a Laredo storm do not.

  • Check the route, not just the spot. A curb, a step or a strip of deep gravel between the party and the door blocks a wheelchair.
  • Plan for its width. At 62 inches, the Comfort XL rarely fits a backyard gate. A driveway or open side yard is easier.
  • Shade it in summer. Laredo averages about 74 days a year at or above 100°F, and a guest using a wheelchair may need more time inside.
  • Keep it level. The driver shims the base on caliche so the door swings true and the floor sits flat.

A cluster like this one counts as one group under §213.2, so it needs at least 1 accessible unit.

Home parties

Do I need an accessible unit at a private party?

At a private home party, we apply no 5% rule; the deciding question is whether any of your guests uses a wheelchair, walker or cane. If one does, book 1 accessible unit. In our 2026 call review, 2 calls were birthday parties, one of them a 90th, where older guests make this choice easy.

An accessible unit also helps guests you might not think of: a parent with a toddler, a guest on crutches, or an older guest who needs room and time. Anyone can use it.

Mixing unit types

Can a wheelchair user use a restroom trailer or a deluxe unit instead?

Usually not. A restroom trailer sits on wheels with steps up to the door, and the deluxe Fleet is a 47-inch stall built for walk-in use. Neither one gives a wheelchair room to roll in and turn. At a wedding with a trailer, add 1 Comfort XL beside it.

This comes up most at weddings and quinceañeras. The couple books a restroom trailer with A/C for comfort, then remembers a grandparent who uses a chair. Set the Comfort XL next to the trailer, on the same level ground, so nobody has to walk farther.

Booking

How do I book an accessible unit with the rest of my order?

Book the accessible unit on the same call as the rest of your order, at least a few days ahead, because same-day stock is standard units and hand-wash stations only. Give dispatch 3 numbers: the guest count, the event length and how many separate clusters of toilets you plan to set up.

  1. Call (956) 396-3700 in English or Spanish, Monday–Saturday, 7 am–7 pm.
  2. Share any permit or venue requirement so we can send the spec sheet before the event.
  3. Mark each cluster's spot and the accessible unit's spot on a photo or site map.
  4. Delivery in a 4-hour window, with a text about 30 minutes before the truck arrives.

FAQ

Handicap porta potty questions

Questions taken from real rental calls, answered by our dispatchers.

(956) 396-3700
How much is a handicap porta potty?
A wheelchair-accessible PolyJohn Comfort XL typically runs $210–$310 before tax for an event in Laredo. The flat event price covers 1–5 days on site, delivery, setup, pickup, toilet paper and sanitizer. Jobsite rentals are quoted per 28 days with weekly service. Laredo's 8.25% sales tax appears on the quote.
Is your accessible unit certified for my inspection?
We describe the Comfort XL as wheelchair-accessible, and we do not certify units for any inspection. If a permit, venue contract or inspector names a requirement, send it to us before you book. We will share the manufacturer's spec sheet, and the inspector or permit office makes the call.
Can a wheelchair turn around inside?
The Comfort XL has a roll-in floor with no door sill and more than 16 square feet of open floor. The 2010 ADA Standards describe turning space as a 60-inch-diameter circle or a T-shaped space. If a guest uses a large power chair, ask us for the interior measurements before the event.
Will the accessible unit fit through my backyard gate?
Probably not. The Comfort XL is 62 inches wide and weighs 240 pounds, so it needs a driveway, a double gate or open ground. Our crew can cart a unit about 25 feet from the truck. Plan a firm, level route from the party to the door.
Can the accessible unit be the only toilet at a small party?
Yes, anyone can use it. Keep in mind its waste tank holds 33 gallons, about half of a standard unit's 60. For parties past about 4 hours, pair it with a standard unit (typically $150–$225 per event) so the accessible stall stays free for the guest who needs it.
Do we need one at our church festival or school carnival?
If the event has portable toilets grouped together, the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 call for at least 5% of the units in each cluster to be accessible, and never fewer than 1. Confirm the requirement with your organizer or permit office; we size the order to match.
Does the accessible unit have a sink?
No, the Comfort XL comes without a sink; sanitizer is stocked inside. A hand-wash station typically adds $85–$150 per event. Foot-pump sinks can be hard to work from a wheelchair, so set the station on firm ground beside the door and keep sanitizer stocked.
