What it is

What is a hand washing station, and what comes with it?

A hand washing station is a freestanding sink stand with 2 foot-pump basins, so 2 people wash at once without touching a faucet. Ours is the PolyJohn Bravo: about 35 inches wide, 26 inches deep and 55 inches tall, with about 34 gallons of fresh water and a separate tank that catches the grey water.

  • Foot pumps, not handles. Nobody touches a tap with dirty or greasy hands.
  • Two sides, two people. A line at the buffet moves twice as fast as one sink in the house.
  • Soap and paper towels are stocked before the station leaves our yard.
  • Clean water in, dirty water held. Grey water stays in its own tank instead of soaking your lawn.

Sizing

How many hand washing stations do I need when food is served?

Our house rule is 1 hand washing station for every 2 toilets whenever food is served, with a minimum of 1. A 100-guest backyard party with 2 standard units needs 1 station. A 200-guest quinceañera with 12 toilets needs 6, split between the restroom area and the path to the food.

Parties & kids

Why add a hand-wash station at a quinceañera or kids' party?

A quinceañera or kids' party can run 6 hours or more, with a full dinner, cake, a dance floor and children who eat with their hands. Sanitizer gel does not clean sticky or greasy hands well; soap and water do. One 2-sink station by the food line keeps the house bathroom from becoming the only sink for 100 guests.

  • Put one station where kids pass most, between the bounce house or yard games and the food table.
  • Keep it in sight of an adult. Little kids love foot pumps, and they will empty the water for fun.
  • Shade it. A sink in full sun in July is not where anyone wants to stand.

Jobsites & ranches

What does OSHA require for hand washing on a jobsite?

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(f) requires construction employers to provide adequate washing facilities, near the work, for crews handling paints, coatings, herbicides, insecticides or other harmful substances. On farms and ranches, OSHA 1928.110 calls for 1 toilet and 1 hand-washing facility per 20 hand-laborers, within a quarter-mile walk, once 11 or more work.

Legal minimum vs our advice. The rule text is on OSHA's 1926.51 page. Our advice goes further: any crew that eats lunch on site gets a station beside the toilet, and summer crews of 8 or more get 2 service visits a week. We are not giving legal advice; your safety officer decides.
  • Painters, drywall and roofers handle coatings and dust all day. A station beside the work saves a trip to the truck's water jug.
  • Ranch hands at shipping or harvest time fall under 1928.110 once 11 or more work in the field.
  • Warehouses and truck yards along Mines Road often have a building restroom far from the yard. A station at the dock helps.

The full crew rules are in our OSHA porta potty requirements guide.

Placement & heat

Where should the hand washing station go?

Set the hand washing station on level ground within a few steps of the toilets and on the path back to the food, never inside the serving area. The Bravo needs about 35 by 26 inches of floor plus standing room at both basins. At about 70 pounds empty, the station fits gates a 48-inch-gate porta potty cannot.

One caller asked for the toilet to go "on the side, so it's not right by where people are eating." The sink belongs between the two: close enough that guests use it on the way back, far enough that nobody washes next to the tortillas.

Does the water hold up in 100°F heat?

The station arrives full of fresh water for a one-day party. Laredo averages a 100.8°F high in July, and people wash more often in heat. For a two-day event or an all-day festival, book a mid-event refill. Jobsite stations are serviced weekly with the toilet, and summer crews of 8 or more do better with 2 visits a week.

Remodels & long jobs

Can I keep a hand-wash station for a month during a remodel?

Yes. A hand-wash station can stay on a 28-day cycle with weekly service, the same billing as a jobsite toilet, and there is no contract. That setup fits a home remodel with the water shut off for 4–6 weeks, where the family and the crew both need somewhere to wash.

One caller in our 2026 review was redoing a bathroom with no running water in the house for 4 to 6 weeks. The toilet solved half the problem. A station by the back door solves the other half: brushing teeth, washing a toddler's hands, rinsing paint off before lunch.

  1. Drop day starts the clock. Billing runs every 28 days, not by calendar month.
  2. Weekly service: fresh water in, grey water out, soap and towels restocked.
  3. Call when the water is back on. Pickup comes within 1–2 business days, and billing stops.

More on month-to-month setups: long-term 28-day rentals.

Station or deluxe?

Should I rent a hand-wash station or a deluxe unit with a sink?

A deluxe unit puts 1 sink inside the stall for the person who just used it. A hand-wash station puts 2 sinks outside, where anyone can use them: guests coming from the food table, kids from the yard, a cook with salsa on his hands. For a meal with 50 or more guests, the outside station serves more hands.

FAQ

Hand-wash station questions

Questions taken from real rental calls, answered by our dispatchers.

(956) 396-3700
Can I rent just the hand-wash station, without a toilet?
Yes. The two-sink station rents on its own for a food booth, a school event or a house with plenty of bathrooms but a long buffet line. A hand-wash station typically runs $85–$150 per event before tax in Laredo, including delivery, pickup, soap and paper towels.
Is there hot water?
No. The station pumps clean, unheated fresh water from its own tank, so it needs no power. Soap and paper towels do the work. In a Laredo summer, the water in the tank is rarely cold anyway.
What happens if the soap or water runs low at an all-day event?
Call (956) 396-3700 and we send a truck to refill water, empty the grey tank and restock soap and towels. An extra service visit typically runs $40–$70 before tax. Multi-day events, like a WBCA weekend or a tournament, can book nightly service up front.
Does the station need a hose or an outlet?
No. The PolyJohn Bravo carries about 34 gallons of fresh water and a separate grey-water tank, and the sinks run on foot pumps. It needs no hose, no outlet and no drain, so it can stand anywhere a person can walk.
Will the station fit through my side gate?
Almost always. The Bravo is about 35 inches wide and 26 inches deep, and it weighs about 70 pounds empty. It fits through gates too narrow for a standard porta potty, which needs 48 inches.
Do food vendors at my event each need their own sink?
Food-booth hand-washing rules come from the health department, not from us. Call the City of Laredo Health Department about your permit before the event. Once you know the count, we deliver the stations and place them where each booth needs one.
Can you set a station at my jobsite for the painting crew?
Yes. OSHA 1926.51(f) calls for washing facilities near the work when crews handle paints, coatings or other harmful substances. A jobsite station rides the same 28-day billing as the toilet and gets weekly service; dispatch quotes it as its own line. The standard toilet beside it typically runs $135–$199 per 28 days before tax.
